The Path 5.14R Whipper!

The Path 5.14R Whipper!

Canadian Sonnie Trotter made the first ascent of The Path 5.14R at the Back of the Lake in Alberta in 2007. The route has become a must-try trad test-piece that’s been repeated by several of the world’s most accomplished gear climbers. The most recent send was by Hayden Jamieson, watch his whipper below.

It was an old bolted project that nobody had tried in years by the time Trotter arrived. Upon inspection, he found adequate protection so opted to chop the fixed pro. He then took several big but safe falls onto small gear before grabbing the first free ascent. Trotter climbed it a year after opening Cobra Crack in Squamish.

Other climbers who’ve sent The Path, include Babsi Zangerl, Alex Megos (flashed), Tommy Caldwell, Jacopo Larcher, Ethan Pringle, Matt Wilder, Peter Kamitses, Miles Adamson, Nathan Hadley, Doug McConnell, Tim Emmett, Read Macadam, Danny Poceta, Dexter Bateman, Simon Yamamoto and Nick Rochacewich. Below is a photo by Trotter of Caldwell on The Path.
